James:
Hi, and welcome to On a Mission. I’m James, and joining me today is Johnnie McLaughlin. Johnnie, how are you?
Johnnie:
Fantastic. How are you, James?
James:
I’m doing great. Thank you so much for joining me today—it’s really a treat. I just want to ask you one question to start us off: what’s your mission?
Johnnie:
I’m on a mission to tell people about Jesus. I believe that when Scripture says, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and He’ll take care of the rest,” that’s absolutely true. That belief really drives me. People are dealing with so many needs, so much trouble, and so many struggles—and on their own, it’s almost impossible to overcome them.
But with God, everything is possible. I want to reach not just nonbelievers, but also people who call themselves Christians. I find that many don’t truly understand what it means to be a Christian.
James:
How are you able to help people in finding God?
Johnnie:
A big part of it is my testimony. My mother was 16 when she had me and struggled with drug addiction. I became addicted to various drugs at 16. I was in and out of crime from about age 13 until my mid-30s, and I battled crack cocaine addiction until I was around 38. I finally quit cocaine at 42, and I’m 49 now.
I’ve experienced homelessness, death, depression, addiction—everything. God has taken all the mess in my life and turned it into fertilizer to grow something beautiful. What He’s done in my life, He can do in anyone else’s life if they don’t just accept Jesus as Savior, but truly allow Him to sit on the throne of their life as Lord.
James:
That sanctification process—I love that. I also noticed your hat. I see dogs on it. What’s that about?
Johnnie:
In 2022, God gave me a vision about a dog’s relationship with its master. A good dog is always aware of its master’s presence, wants to please its master, stays where the master wants it to be, and avoids where the master doesn’t want it to be.
Even when a dog is distracted—like chasing another dog—if it hears the master’s call, it turns back. If you flip the word “dog,” you get “God.” That’s the kind of relationship we’re meant to have with our Father—walking in unity with Him because of what Jesus did for us.
A few days later, I went to a service at 1122, and the pastor said, “This is the year of being sent.” They handed out bracelets that said Sent. Then, days later, I was watching TV and accidentally landed on a channel with a rabbi talking about Jesus. He used the Hebrew word shaliach, which means “sent one.”
The following week, while serving on the care team at 1122, someone told me I should check out Rabbi Schneider’s work on prayer. It turned out he was the exact rabbi I’d seen on TV. I also noticed the bracelet said One on the back, tying into the declaration that the Lord our God is one.
All of it came together—Sent One, messenger, disciples of God. The Holy Spirit just led it. I started creating shirts with images on the front and Scripture on the back. Everything I do is about making much of my Father. I get to go to work with Him every day, and I love telling people about Him.
James:
I love that. When you say you get to go to work with Him every day, what does that look like?
Johnnie:
I’m always on mission wherever I am. A few years ago, I was at Subway ordering a sandwich. After it was made, I asked the woman behind the counter if I could pray for her. She said yes, turned the radio down, and grabbed my hands.
After we prayed, she started crying. I invited her to church, and she told me she didn’t have a car. My wife and I told her we’d pick her up. Two weeks later, she texted me to ask if we were serious—we were. She came to church, got connected, and eventually my wife and a friend baptized her in the ocean.
All of that started from simply sharing my faith while ordering a sandwich.
James:
That’s amazing. So no matter where you are—restaurants, mechanic shops—you’re willing to speak the Word.
Johnnie:
Absolutely. It’s an opportunity. It’s a gift. The truth of the gospel brings the freedom people are seeking and the peace they desperately desire.
James:
Is this something you’re doing independently, or are you moving toward something more organized?
Johnnie:
I do it independently all the time, but I also lead a discipleship group at 1122 that started in December 2019. We usually have between 7 and 15 men, and over time, about a dozen groups have branched out from that original group.
I’m also hoping to start an 18-to-25-year-old men’s discipleship group. I want to continue encouraging men to be godly men. On top of that, I organize prayer walks—going into the city with the intention of praying for people and inviting others to join.
James:
Walk me through that. What does a prayer walk look like?
Johnnie:
We meet at a designated spot—in this case, Memorial Park at the statue with the globe and angel on top. I explain why we’re there, we pray together, then divide into groups. I always try to make sure there’s a woman in each group when ministering to women.
We simply approach people and ask, “Excuse me, can we pray for you?” Most people are very open to it. That often leads to conversations about faith, why we’re doing this, and invitations to church.
Prayer impacts everyone—the person being prayed for, the people praying, and even those who witness it. It’s like a Holy Spirit bomb going off.
James:
Amazing. Johnnie, thank you so much for joining us. I really appreciate it.
James:
This has been On a Mission. Joining me today was Johnnie McLaughlin. We’ll see you next time.
